At the Daily Kos does Soj; have interesting explanation of why the cartoon crises suddenly did explode, after for a long while had been an mostly internal Danish discussion.

Opium to the masses

I don’t know how public the knowledge is, that somehow the country Denmark offended mortally every Muslim in the world when a privately owned newspaper printed 12 portraits of Muhammad,

The Guardian has a short description of the case development here.
To which I will only add, that two of the cartoons portrays Muhammad positive and two others are fairly neutral to positive, another two criticize the news paper and does not show Muhammed, four of them do satirize Muhammed. They can be seen here

I talked to my grandmother (89) over the phone; she was very worried over the protest against Denmark, with flag burning of home made versions the Danish national flag and the prime minister and generally calls of destruction of Denmark. She asked me if thought there was going to be a war over this, to which I answered, no.
